Jan Hus Bursík

Jan H. Bursik, originating from picturesque Central Bohemian village Neveklov, engaged in playing violin since his childhood. His future career was also formed by his family background. Due to the fact that his father and uncle were both carvers, the work with wood soon became a natural part of his everyday life. He was taught the art of violinmaking in Luby by Cheb and accomplished his studies of this wonderful craft during the internship at master violinmakers Vladimir and Tomas Pilars in Hradec Kralove. He became a member of the Czech circle of Masters Violinmakers in 1986. He is a member of the Committee of the Circle (the supreme body of this association). He founded his own atelier in Brno in 1988. His wife has been working with him there since that time.

He get to know the violins world also from the other side – as a violinist. He studied playing the violin at the State Conservatory in Prague and played for many years in the Brno Radio Orchestra of the Folk Instruments. As a violinmaker, he has presented many times his top art by successes at the international competitions. Among others, let’s mention his participation in the final of the international violinmaking competition in Mittenwald or the second prize and the Certificate of Merit for a great sound quality at the international violinmaking competition of Oskar Nedbal (viola) and the third prize with his violin at the same competition. Jan H. Bursik's instru­ments are played by many significant Czech and foreign musicians, among others Iva Bittova, Jiri Pavlica from the group Hradišťan, the concert master of the Brno Philharmonic Pavel Wallinger, professor of the Brno Music Academy of Leoš Janaček Bohumil Smejkal, young soloist Milan Pal'a and many other artists from prestigious orchestras and music ensembles.

The personality of Jan H. Bursik was included in the “Who is Who” encyclopedia in Czech Republic in 2002. He has two sons, Jan and Bronislav, who work together with their father in their workshop in Kamenna street in Brno.
